As I mentioned before, Roxie and I took a nice long trip for a couple of weeks. One of our stops was to my hometown up in the Santa Cruz mountains. If you are ever in the bay area, I highly recommend a stop in Santa Cruz. Even though I grew up there I am still always amazed at how much I love it and keep wanting to go back. Here are a couple of suggestions for things to do.
Henry Cowell State Park in Felton: There are over 20 miles of trails to explore, but Roxie and I just stuck to the main loop. She discovered dirt and banana slugs and couldn’t have been happier. The redwoods are truly spectacular.
The Beach: Well isn’t that obvious? We went to Twin Lakes which is a very family friendly beach. It’s right next to the harbor so the waves aren’t too big. It can get a little windy, but that’s the beach for you. If you’re just planning to go for a couple of hours I recommend parking at the Crow’s Nest parking lot. It’s a couple of dollars and they only accept cash, but it’s worth not stressing about how far away you have to park.
The Santa Cruz Wharf: When I was 20 I worked at a little shop on the Wharf. It was a great summer job! I could look out the window at work and see dolphins playing around in the water. If you make it down there make sure you stop at Stagnaro’s for some clam chowder or some freshly caught fish. There are some stairs you can go down to check out the sea lions. Oh and don’t forget to stop at Marini’s for a sweet treat.
The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk: Every tourists dream right!? An amusement park on the beach!! I grew up getting season passes to the Boardwalk every summer. I don’t remember it being so crowded, but it’s always been kinda dirty with the best greasy food. Roxie enjoyed the kiddie rides. There is something fun for everyone.
Have fun and let us know if you need any other advice or tips for traveling to Santa Cruz!
